A group of us from work traveled to Heath lake(Rome GA) for our first annual crappie slaughter. :D I am new to Georgia but have heard good things about Heath lake and the spring crappie bite. We landed a few fish and had a small fish fry for dinner...mmmm. Unfortunately the water temperature is still a little cold so the crappie werent in the shallows on-bed yet so we didn't catch the numbers we wanted. It was my first time to travel to Heath lake but I will definitely travel there in the future. It is a small lake(several hundred acres) with a rule of motor boats can't throttle above idle so it is kayak friendly. There is flooded timber a few hundred yards from the dock in several directions. Also, it is only open the first ten days of the month so it doesn't get as much fishing pressure as other bodies of water. We caught our fish casting and retrieving 1/16oz jigs with grubs in the flooded timber.

What did you mean by "only open for 10 days??"

Is it now closed until May 1st? That would be an interesting lake! Is there a bass bite up there too?

Anyone else depressed about the weather forecast this weekend?

The lake is literally only open to the public the first 10 days of the month. http://georgiawildlife.dnr.state.ga.us/ ... ry=fishing

Scroll down to the picture with a dock and you will see that it states only open the 1-10th of each month.

To answer your bass question. I imagine the bass fishing will be good in the future because they currently impose a 14-20inch slot limit with only one fish over 20" allowed in your limit.

this lake reminds me of a miniature Lake Fork in Texas. There is so much cover with flooded stumps you can't ever imagine the fishing being bad.

Another lake for you to check out is Lake Weiss, just west of Rome near the AL/GA border. I have read that it is THE crappie fishing capital of the galaxy :-)

A good friend of mine just bought a large chunk of property there last week and since his property already has two boat ramps, I fully intend to put one of them into use as soon as I can after the Blackshear tourney to see if that 'myth' is true.
